Dumpster diving
discussion on dumpster diving with Eli Martin, Jeremy Cooper, Justin Garrett, Dane Wommack, and Whitney Layne
1) He uses his sences and comon sinces to test the food that he finds to make sure it is safe to eat.
He stays to what he knows and places he is fimilar with and sticks to a rutine and times where he know when he can find the best foods, exsample keeping an eye on the college schedule.
He always asked the question why was the food discarted.
2) The foods that is likes and was happy to find was pizza, caned goods, dry foods and yogart and the foods he did not want or what he could not use was green leafy vegies and home caned goods, left overs from residental homes and things he could not clean.
3) The differents in can and scroungers was that the can scroungers was taht they dont look for anything but cans they were dirty in his eyes cause they make a mess of the trash and are not considerit of others pushing all the good stuff to the bottom and most of them are winos just looking for a way to get their fix, and the good dumster divers will leave things clean and are considerate of others leaving things out in plan site, they are very pratical people.
4) the animals that he incounterd were fire ants, bees, cats, and birds
5)He was sorry for others cause they ware not taking advantage of that is around them and they are missing out on life.
6)His writing style was very repetive and discribtive, He was prideful about the way he did things and his way was the right way when other who did it might have been impratical.

Review of "On dumpster diving"
1.
A. If you find something good make sure to set it aside for the next diver so they can have it.
B. Stay away from dairy.
C. Be careful not to dive too deep, resulting in crushed goods.
2.Preferred foods- canned food, pizza, fruit, vegetables, and candy.
Avoided- game, poultry, pork, and egg based foods.
3. Diver- Someone who lives completely out of the dumpsters. Someone who is curtious and respectful to the garbage. They made sure not to crush any valuable items.
Scrounger- They are just there to make quick cash. They tend to be disrespectful and ruin many of the valuable items due to their impulsive behavior.
4. Fire ants, dead dogs, maggots, alley cats.
5. He was in denial; he believed that the character he gained was more valuable than possesions.
6. His tone was rather sarcastic and obsessive at times. His style was incredibly informative, persuasive and passionate.

1.) He talked alot about the location of the dumpster, weather or not its in a residential area or near a college campus. He also talked about not keeping everything you find. Make sense of the things you need and get rid of the rest. Eighner says in the story that the best way to get the good stuff at the bottom of the Dumpster is to lower yourself in.
2.) The foods that Eighner ate the most of were: yogurt, pizza, canned foods. Also foods that were dry: crackers, chips, candy or individually wrapped. The food that he typically stayed away from were: Veggie juices, poultry, eggs, fish, ethnic foods or things he didnt know what it was.
3.)Dumpster Diver's look for the essentials, food, drink, blankets, household goods. A can scrounger shuffle through the cans and make big messes therefore ruining the things that can be salvaged for the divers to use.
4.) Cats, bees, fire ants, and maggots.
5.)People that are more fortunate then he is dont realize how good they have it. By him saying "I feel sorry for them", he's saying that they need to open their eyes and see how much they throw away on a daily basis.
6.)The tone is very informative, who knew that someone could write that much on dumpster diving? The tone was light, easy to understand and picture how it feels and things essential things you can salvage from others trash.

Eric Wood-Intro
Eric Wood-Intro
Hello my name is Eric Wood. I am 18 years of age. My dad is in the army so i have traveled all over the United States. I never spent more than four years in one state until we arrived in Missouri. Prior to living in Missouri, i lived in New York, California, and Germany. I arrived in Missouri to begin my seventh grade year and have been here ever since. I went to high school in the small town of Plato. The population sign in the front of the town reads 74. The livestock on one farm outnumbers the town's population. In high school, I played sports year round. In the fall i ran cross country, in the winter i played basketball, and in spring i ran track. I love playing and watching sports. My favorite sport to play is basketball. My favorite sport to watch is football. When the NFL season kicks off on September eighth, I will be watching as my favorite team, the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, start their bid to repeat as champions. Other than sports I enjoy playing poker, video games, and hanging out with friends. I am currently in my second year of general studies in college. After this year i plan to transfer to MSU and study journalism. I hope to have a future career as a sportswriter so i can watch sports and give my thoughts for a living.
Cody Bareford-Intro
Hello, my name is Cody Bareford, I'm nineteen years old, and was raised in Strafford, Mo. I discovered I wanted to become an athletic trainer after tearing my acl and meniscus during the first football game of my senior year, so I decided a good place to start was at Otc. In my free time I enjoy working on my honda(f20b swapped), hunting, fishing, listening to music, and spending time with my lovely girlfriend Jessica Elliott, whom i met in English composition 101. After my time at Otc i would like to transfer to Msu or possibly New Mexico.
Jessica Elliott "Intro"
Hello, my name is Jessica Elliott. I am nineteen years old and from Morrisville Missouri. I moved to Springfield a little over a year now and have been attending OTC ever since. I have not quite decided on what I would like to do for the future since I am interested in so many things. I have two amazing sisters named Angelah and Evanah that have taught me a lot about myself and life in general. Some of the things I like to do would consist of shopping, watching movies, traveling, cheer leading, and hanging out with my wonderful boyfriend Cody Bareford.

Tiffani Calvisky Intro
My name is Tiffani Calvisky, I am going to school for a Business Admin Degree. I plan to finish my general courses here at OTC then transfer over to MSU. I am in the Army Reserve and have done two tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. I got back from Iraq/Kuwait 3 weeks ago and I dont plan on doing anymore tours until after college. I was born in Oregon and moved to Bluffton, Indiana when my parents transfered jobs. There I graduated high school and joined the Army. After my first tour in Afghanistan in 2008-2009 I moved here to Springfield to go to school. I love to be outside (when the weather is warm) and play sports. I also enjoy riding horses. I dont own any horses so I settle with just reading and learning about them during my spare time. I love to exercise but what I love more then anything is spending time with my family... maybe because we are all spread so far apart. I have a wonderful twin sister, Sarah, and an older sister, Jenny. My parents own a few golf courses in Indiana so family visits are never boring. and best of all....Im engaged to the most wonderful man a woman could ask for. He treats me like a queen! :)
Eli Martin- Intro
My name is Eli Martin, I was born in West Plains Missouri on Sept. 28, 1991. Since I was a baby I have lived in the small town of Thayer Missouri until I moved up to Springfield to attend college at Missouri State University to play football. After a few reconstructive surgeries on my shoulders I decided to just be a college student here at OTC. While I was growing up I lived in Thayer so I had to keep myself busy, my buddies and I were always hunting, and fishing. We would always stay out at my farm and some of my buddies farms and had our hunting camps all the time. That, to me was more fun than than the actual hunt this is where we just sat around, visited and played cards for hours on end.
Angela Milton-Intro
I was born and raised in Missouri. After raising my daughter I decided to go to school. This is my second year at OTC and I plan on transferring to MSU soon. I hope to obtain a masters degree in computer science. I have a wonderful husband named Charlie, and a beautiful daughter, Caitlin, who is currently a sophomore in the Columbia College nursing program. The absolute pride and joy of my life is my beautiful granddaughter Idalie.
Whitney Layne- intro
My name is Whitney Layne, I am almost 25 years old and I am a mom of two. Audrey is my daughter and she is the first best thing that ever happened to me, she is three years old and came into my life during a rough time, I was twenty one trying to find myself and did not know what I wanted in life. I tried to focus on work and provide for my family, and three years later I gave birth to my son Hayden, and during my time off work I decided I wanted to further my education because I finally know what I want to do with my life. So my boyfriend of eight years and I are finally getting married May 5th 2012, I am going back to school, and I feel like I on the right track.
Jacob Edwards- intro
The blog will be a free flowing conversation.....
Hello, My name is Jacob Edwards. I was born in Kansas City, MO on December 6th, 1987. I lived in Independence my whole childhood, and graduated from William Chrisman Highschool in 2006. Since graduating from higschool, i have yet to really settle down. I worked three jobs for a year, then went to school in Arkansas, then lived and worked in Springfield for a year, then moved back to Kansas City, where I worked and went back to school. Now im back in Springfield, closing in on finally getting my associates and hopefully I am on the fast track to being done with school. I work full time as a barista at starbucks, transferring from my store in Kansas City. Most of my free time is spent either playing or watching sports. Being from Kansas City, I am a proud fan of both the Royals and the Chiefs. Weirdly enough, I also am a fan of the Boston Celtics ( I was a fan when they sucked), the reason being is that I ment Paul Pierce at a basketball camp when I was in the fourth grade. I enjoy reading, mostly long, dramas ( Jon Grisham), but also enjoy comedies. My favorite past times are driving by myself for long distances, and going to the movies alone. The reason being is that I dont tend to get a lot of free time, so when I do, i make it enjoyable (thats what she said.) My favorite TV show is ghost adventures, not so much because I believe in ghosts or anything, but because the guys on that show are crazy. Who else whishes there was a word counter? I went to Puerto Vallarto, Mexico this summer for my best friends wedding. It was the coolest thing that I have ever done, the hotel was right on the beach, we zip lined threw the jungle, swam with dolphins and sealions. Pretty neat. On the way back, our flight in Phoenix was delayed because the front window on the plane just fell off. My favorite part about that is that we could see them fix it, and all they did was put what appeared to be some sort of glue on the window, then stuck the glass back on, then BAM, good to go. The picture is me at some dance my senior year of Highschool ('06). Is this enough?
Brittny Jones- Introduction
Cortney Hazelrigg "Intro"
My name is Cortney Hazelrigg, I am 21 years old and was born and raised here in Springfield. I went to High School at Kickapoo and during high school I swam all four years. While swimming at Kickapoo I was on the State team all four years, and was the teams backstroker for our medley relay all four years as well. As you can see swimming was a huge part of my life. I began swimming at the age of 8 and swam competitively all the way up until I graduated high school. When I was not swimming growing up you could find me at my grandma's house riding horses. I have been riding horses since I was only a couple months old. My horse is half missuori fox trotter and half qaurter horse, his name is Gator and he turned twenty seven this past June.
I have been here at OTC for two years now and hopefully this spring I will transfer to MSU to study elementary education. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of becoming a first or second grade teacher.
Taylor Graves-Intro
Well first of all my name is Taylor Graves, I am 21 years old. I grew up in Ozark and lived there for 21 years, and just recently moved to Springfield, MO in April since my parents moved up to Kansas. I am taking this Composition 2 class with my cousin Cortney Hazelrigg since we both took Composition 1 together our freshmen year. I work at TJ MAXX and I have been there for over a year. I have one older brother named Matt and he is married to LaDina and they have 2 little girls name Ryleigh and Jadyn. I have a boxer named Riley, and I also have a horse named Sugar. I have played sports all my life, I have played tennis, basketball, baseball, and I did competitive cheerleading for 10 years. At OTC I want to go into the medical field and so physical therapy or sports medicine, but lately I have been thinking about doing criminal justice or graphic design and create commericals and logos for companys and or schools. I am a big country music fan and I cant wait to go see Miranda Lambert in Springfield, MO at JQH in October. I also am a HUGE fan of Glee, Jersey Shore, and Oklahoma State University, GO POKES!
Elana Carson- Introduction
Hello! My name is Elana Carson. I am a young 18 year old who just graduated from LCA(Lighthouse Christian Academy) last spring. I have a HUGE passion for missions, domestic and foreign. I will be interning at Realife Student Ministries this fall as well as working at the historic Landers Theatre in downtown Springfield and coming to school here at OTC. Let's just say my schedule is PACKED! At the theatre, I work in the box office as assistant manager as well as teaching Elementary and Junior High hip-hop classes! I love to dance. This past summer I spent 6 weeks in China on a missions trip doing an "English and Language cultural exchange". It was amazing! I got to help the students with their english as well as dancing for them and learning a bit of chinese myself. Something that was incredibly interesting that I learned about the chinese students was that, they go to school around 12 hours a day. However, they do not test nearly as well as american students. It was extrememly interesting to see how their lives are completley overtaken by school, but the fact that it is so overbearing ends up causing a reverse affect. Before China, I went to California for Speech and Debate nationals! I was in the top 30 in 5 different events. It was a blast! I also went to a summer camp, a camping trip and even have managed to have a few days of "Chill" time before school started back up! I am excited to be here in this class! After OTC, I plan on attending Evangel University and double majoring in Biblical Studies and Marketing/Advertisment! I am a VERY determined young student and am excited to see how God uses me to change the world.
I can't wait to meet all of you!
Elana Carson

Coy Draheim-Intro
Hi I am Coy Draheim and i was born in Springfield, MO. on May 7th, 1990. I grew up in Lebanon and moved to Springfield when I was ten. I went to middle school at Pershing and then graduated from Glendale in 2009. I am currently going to school to get my degree in teaching and would love to end up teaching history and be a basketball coach. Ideally i would like to be a middle school history teacher and go to school for my masters degree.
Some of my hobbies include playing sports, listening to all kinds of music, reading and being around family and friends. I love to play sports but my favorite would have to be basketball. I played in high school and would love to continue enjoying the game as a coach later in life. Family is also really important to me and I enjoy being around my nephews. I have three nephews, Javen, Jaxon, and Jayln which are a handful at times but also a lot of fun to hang out with. They make me want to have a kid of my own but not until after i finish college and settle down in my career.
Kearsten Jones- Intro
Hey Guys! My name is Kearsten Jones and this is my second year at OTC. I have two sisters and a bassett hound named Maggie. I will be going to Missouri State University next fall. I am planning on getting my bachelors degree in English Education and I eventually want to teach high school english. I really love football and especially Sam Bradford!!! I also love doing anything outdoors. Going to the lake is one of my favorite vacation spots. I am looking forward to this class and hope that it's going to be a great year with all of you :-)
Justin Garrett - Intro
My name is Steven Garrett, I go by Justin since my dads name is Steven as well. I am a sophomore this year and I went to Logan-Rogersville High School. I graduated in 2010. I played baseball for about as long as I could remember, up until my senior year. I was asked by the coaches several times to play soccer for them so, I eventually gave in. At first, I didn't think soccer would be my thing, but the more I played, the more I enjoyed the game. Soccer was by far the most fun sport, for me, in high school. Other than sports at school, I've been riding dirt bikes since I was about 5 years old. I've grown up around dirt bikes and four wheelers, so naturally started riding them.
Right now, obviously, I am going to OTC. My plan for my life is to become a dentist when I get out of college. I am planning on going to MSU for my junior and senior year of college, they have a "pre-dental school" there, but unfortunatly they don't actually offer dental school. So the next closest place with a dental school would be the University of Missouri Kansas City. So, as of right now, these are my plans for school.
Dane Wommack - Intro
Hey class, I'm a goofy guy who enjoys writing and playing music of all kinds as a main hobby. My instruments of expertise include piano, guitar, bass guitar and violin. I played bass in a local band for a little while and really enjoyed it. From time to time I also enjoy editing films and making home movies.
For what brings home the bacon, I work at Wommack Foods grocery store here in Springfield located just off of Chestnut Expressway on North Grant, a little west of OTC. Crazy stuff happens there all the time, so stop by for free entertainment.

I have 3 sisters, 1 older, 2 younger, and a pet bassett name Axel Von Bassett (Mostly just called Axel though.)
Levi Thurman - Intro
My name is Levi Thurman. I was born in Joplin, Missouri. I have lived in Missouri my entire life. The last eight years I have lived in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. I graduated high school from El Dorado Springs, Missouri in 2010. My family also owns a restaurant there. Going to college in Springfield is a big change for me considering the town I lived in had a population of less than 4,000. This is my second semester at OTC. I am considering majoring in biology here at OTC, depending on how my biology class goes this semester. After I complete my degree at OTC I plan on attending Missouri State University to pursue a degree in Wildlife Conservation. I am generally pretty good in math and science classes, but English is my weakest subject. My hobbies include hunting, fishing, canoeing, golfing, and other outdoor activities. I am pretty much an outside person. I am often called a perfectionist even though I do not believe perfection is attainable. I believe perfection should always be the goal because if you can get anywhere close to perfection then you usually will be successful.
Alicia Amlin - Con-Goer, Cosplayer, Insi of the Stories
I enjoy visiting scifi, fantasy, and anime conventions, Renaissance fairs, and Japanese festivals. Drawing, writing, and doll making keep me busy, and I hope to be a vendor at VisionCon 2012. I was raised with Jim Henon's greatest works, such as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, and I am now a puppeteer working fast to becoming a ventriloquist. I own a special, extremely realistic Baby Dragon puppet that I had to order off of fantasypuppet.com; several people are convinced that he's real! ^-^
Besides my more creative hobbies, I enjoy reading the Legend of Drizzt series and several action/adventure and fantasy manga.
The following image is my drow character Insi. Drow--also known as dark elves--come from the RPG Dungeons and Dragons. I've dressed as Insi twice, once at this year's VisionCon (first drow to attend VisionCon EVER!), and once at this year's Whitehart Renaissance Fair. The image is slightly outdated: Insi no longer wears the Asian jacket, but now wears a fur coat that she had recieved from an old deceased friend that was a White Wolf. I had to make the ears myself.

About Me
I am a native Kansan although I have been in Missouri since 1990. I come from a large family where I have nine brothers and sisters. I am married and now enjoying my life long dream to be a teacher. I went to college after my two children were grown and the financial burden of raising a family eased. I enjoy learning new and interesting things. I was self employed in several businesses before deciding to get an education. I received a Bachelors of Science degree from Missouri Southern in Joplin. In 2009 I completed my master's degree through Missouri State. I wrote my master's thesis on using technology in the classroom to increase student motivation and performance. For the past four years I have been teaching English to juniors and seniors in a small rural school.
I love life and many times wish there were more hours in a day. I have many interests. I enjoy gardening, swimming, hunting, reading, watching movies, South Park, old rock 'n roll, traveling, learning new things, and many others. One of the greatest joys of my life has been the births of my granddaughters Kelea and Sheridan (pics below). I really marvel at how fast babies can learn.
